History of the Meredith Sculpture Walk
In 2011, The Design Committee of the Greater Meredith Program, successfully completed a project that was named “Courtyard on Main”. This pocket park connected Main Street to The Mill Falls Marketplace with a landscaping plan that included the installation of two pieces of sculpture from local artists.
Born out of this keystone project was a concept for The Meredith Sculpture Walk which would extend the installation of additional sculpture along Main Street, in the Mill Falls Marketplace, and in the three waterside parks that are along Lake Winnipesaukee, creating an annual public art display for the enjoyment of residents and the thousands of visitors to Meredith each year.
In 2012, a working committee of the Greater Meredith Program’s volunteers began the work of planning the First Annual Meredith Sculpture Walk. Committee Chairman, Bev Lapham, made formal presentations to town officials, civic groups, and businesses within town. The concept was met with great enthusiasm and positivity. The committee began the work to select potential site locations, obtain sponsorships, address legal and insurance issues, promotion, jurying, installation support and the creation of a list of potential artists/sculptors and so many more details.
The first call to artists went out in January 2014 to artists and sculptors throughout the Northeastern United States. The response was very gratifying with the receipt of over 60 applications representing over 75 pieces of sculpture! This launched our First Annual Meredith Sculpture Walk! Twenty-Five sculptures were independently juried through with all installations completed by June 2014. With this work behind us, we were able to hold our First Grand Opening Gala Celebration in July of that year.
Overwhelming positive responses to The Meredith Sculpture Walk and continued interest have supported the decision to issue a call to artists annually. Year 2023 was our Tenth Annual display with total sites at 32 as participation, reputation, and popularity has grown.
Thank you to all our wonderful sculptors who have participated in past exhibits, current exhibit, and those who will apply for this year’s exhibit. We thoroughly enjoy working with each of you and the continuation to provide a beautiful location to display your wonderful pieces of art into the future.
Letter from our Chairman
On behalf of the Greater Meredith Program (GMP) we welcome you to the 2nd decade of our Meredith Sculpture Walk! As part of our 32 revolving sculpture display, this year we bring you 14 new pieces from the very best sculptural artists in the Northeast.
Their sculptures are constructed of granite, bronze, hardwood, repurposed metals, cast resin, etc. And we even have a corten steel Cow! We are so appreciative of the support from our artists, our site owners, our sponsors and the Town of Meredith Public Works Department. Public Art and Volunteerism help define the character of a town and Meredith is a shining example.
A big Thank You to our Meredith Sculpture Walk Committee, our
Ground Team and our Docents. To all of our Meredith residents and visitors – Explore and Enjoy!!
